Make Your Own Gear: Essential Tool List
I started making my own gear a few years ago and here's a list of supplies and tools I find helpful for my projects.

Tools
If you're interested in making your own gear, having the right tools can make all the difference. While it's easy to get caught up in buying every tool available, you really only need a few essentials to begin. As you take on more complex projects, you’ll naturally identify additional tools that can improve your workflow.
Please note that I've included links to Amazon for reference convenience, but you can find these tools at your local craft or fabric store.
To help you get started, I've categorized the tools into three levels:
- Must have
- Arteza cutting mat – A durable surface that's self-healing for cutting fabric precisely. Ideally you want to get at least the 24"x36" size so its enough surface area to cut your fabrics on. I like this one because the material is high-quality vinyl and its multi-sided so you can get more life out of it.
- Fiskars rotary cutter – Makes clean fabric cuts with ease especially curved shapes. The 60mm version is ideal for most projects.
- Fiskars Fabric Scissors (8 inch) - left handed – High-quality scissors designed for fabric cutting.
- Clover seam ripper – A must-have for removing stitches cleanly.
- Westcott metal ruler (18 inch) – Ensures straight and accurate measurements.
- Generic plastic clips - Ideal for holding fabric layers together without pinning.
- Should have
- Generic thread scissors – Useful for cutting thread and minor adjustments.
- Sharpie metallic markers – Great for marking on dark fabrics.
- Quilting ruler 6x24" – Essential for cutting precise fabric pieces.
- Nice to have
- Wonder tape – Keeps stretch fabrics aligned for accurate stitching.
- Clover white chaco liner – Ideal for marking fabric with precision.
Supplies
In addition to tools, here are some essential supplies that will help you with your projects:
- Gutermann Extra Strong Thread - Black – Ideal for high-tension projects like backpacks, straps.
- Gutermann All Thread - Black – A versatile thread for general use.
- Micro cord (1.18mm) – Perfect for drawstrings and small loops.
- Grosgrain 3/8" ribbon – Used to reinforce seams and add durability.
- Nylon 1" webbing – Great for making sturdy shoulder straps.
- Shock cord (3/32") – Useful for adjustable closures and stretchable elements.
- Elastic band (1") – Provides flexibility and stretch for various applications.
Final thoughts
Starting your journey in DIY gear-making doesn’t require an extensive collection of tools. Focus on acquiring the must-have tools first, then gradually add more as your projects become more advanced. With these essentials, you'll be well-equipped to create high-quality gear tailored to your needs.
