Cookies and analytics

Essential items are always on. They remember your cookie choice and your light or dark theme, and protect the contact form from spam. These need no consent.

Analytics uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies and sends Google information about your visit:

  • Pages viewed, clicks, scrolling and time on the page
  • Search terms you type into site search
  • Your browser, device type, approximate location and a pseudonymous ID

I use this to see which writing is read and whether the site works. Google receives this data and may process it outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Event data is kept for 14 months.

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics stays off until you choose “Accept all” in the banner. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR and section 25 TDDDG). Elsewhere it is on by default. To decide which applies, the site checks your country from your IP address and keeps the result in your browser for the session.

You can turn analytics off at any time, and the site works the same either way. Then nothing is sent to Google. Your choice lasts 12 months. Change it here:

Contact form

The form sends your name, email address and message to me through a messaging service so I can reply. A bot check from Cloudflare may process your IP address. Messages are kept for 90 days and then deleted.

Hosting

Like any web host, the hosting provider processes your IP address and basic request details in server logs to deliver pages and keep the site secure. Contact messages and server logs rely on my legitimate interest in answering inquiries and keeping the site secure (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Your rights

You can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction or a copy, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest. You can turn analytics off at any time with the link above. Use the contact form for requests. You can also complain to the data protection authority in your country.
